CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Barnhardt today announced that Richard Reid, a globally respected leader in absorbent fibers with more than four decades of experience, has joined the company at a defining moment for the industry.

Reid will serve in a hybrid role spanning business development, product innovation, and technical services – supporting sales, marketing, strategic planning, and customer engagement – while helping guide the company’s next phase of growth as global demand accelerates for natural, purified, and traceable materials.

“Richard brings an extraordinary depth of technical expertise, customer insight, and global market experience,” said Lewis Barnhardt, President and COO of Barnhardt Manufacturing Co. “He understands what’s at stake as demand accelerates for materials that are not only high-performance, but truly pure, safe, and proven. We are drawing a clear line between those standards and everything else – and Richard is exactly the leader we need for this next chapter.”

Reid joins Barnhardt following a 25-year tenure at Kelheim Fibres, where he led technical support and market development across nonwovens, feminine care, and pharmaceutical sectors. Over his career, he has played a critical role in product innovation, quality systems development, and global customer transitions – earning a reputation as a trusted advisor to manufacturers navigating complex material and regulatory environments. His expertise includes FDA and GMP compliance, customer-driven innovation, and advancing fiber technologies for high-performance applications, including period products – where safety, purity, and consistency are non-negotiable.

“Barnhardt represents the gold standard in cotton,” said Reid. “At a time when consumers and manufacturers are rethinking the materials they trust, cotton stands apart as a natural, proven solution. The Barnhardt Purification Standard is the global benchmark for purity – and that clarity of mission is rare. It’s why I’m excited to help lead this next chapter.”

Reid added, “Purified cotton offers a distinctive combination of advantages – hypoallergenic, neutral pH, breathable, adaptable, sustainably grown and processed, and fully traceable from American fields to finished fiber. It’s a powerful platform for innovation, delivering advanced functionality alongside uncompromising safety in a single, natural solution.”

According to Barnhardt, the company is redefining how American cotton is positioned on the global stage. “Consumers demand transparency, safety, and trust in the materials that touch their lives. They want cotton – not synthetics, not chemically engineered fibers, and not lower-grade impure cotton that requires extra work or irradiation for converters and CPGs positioned as substitutes. They want purified American cotton that meets the highest standards for safety and traceability, down to the very field and farmer.”

Barnhardt said the company will soon announce additional developments, including a new global initiative and the involvement of other leading fiber experts from around the world. Barnhardt hints at what he calls “The year of the great American cotton comeback.”
